Nestled in the hills just outside Durban lies Cotswold Downs, a treat for any golfer. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect as I hadn’t heard or read very much about the course other than an article in Golf Digest, but man, it truly was a Beaut.
Overlooking the 10th and 18th holes, the newly built clubhouse (As seen above) is a standout feature before one even reaches the first hole. The service is second to none and a more well oiled golfing operation I haven’t yet found. From the staff in the pro shop to the men tending to your clubs at halfway, you are left with a golfing experience, not just a golf course. The course itself was in exceptional condition when I played and I am led to believe it is like this year round. Well paced and soft greens and lush fairways makes for a true reflection of ones round.
My favourite Holes:
When you first arrive at the par 3 5th you are greeted by a most dramatic hole. A 40M drop to the green makes teeing off on this hole a golfing experience not be missed. The Green has a couple of tiers so hitting your shot correctly will ensure you leave here with par, however, some big bunkers on either side of the green will make a wayward tee shot sandy very quickly. The 5th is probably my favourite hole on the golf course, (Not an easy choice) and is followed closely by my next pick….
The par 4 17th is a truly imposing hole. From an elevated tee shot one can see the hole behind a big water hazard. A long hole if you tug it left and bunkers guarding the right side make this tee shot super important. Once you are off the tee there is an undulating fairway to contend with as well as getting over the hazard with your second shot. Once all is said and done and you are done with the 17th, there is a true feeling of accomplishment. The hole is exceptionally well thought out and is a pleasure to play,it is a great way to start the final leg back to the clubhouse.
Cotswold Downs was for me, a true winner in every sense of the word. There is an immense amount of effort that has gone into the entire golfing package, not just the course. From start to finish it is one of the best golf experiences I have had and would certainly recommend it to anyone, it will not be a disappointment. Cotswold you will see me again, that is for sure!
