Mount Edgecombe Country Club – Course One
SAGA rating: 69 (67 when played due to temporary greens)
Golf Digest ranking: 68
Mount Edgecombe Country Club is situated just outside Umhlanga on the Kwazulu Natal North coast. There are two courses on the club’s grounds, course one and course two. The parklands style course one seemed to be quite dry the day it was played and there were temporary greens on quite a few holes, making the course play much shorter than it usually would. There isn’t a lot of water to contend with until one gets to the finishing holes, making the back nine the more challenging of the two nines in my opinion. The par 5 14th is the hole you see on the left of the picture above.
I have heard many good things about the Mount Edgecombe one track but with some of the greens being redone and how dry the course looked overall, it wasn’t quite the golf course I expected. I would love to come back when the course is playing to how it should but from a first impression, there are a few other courses in the area I would rather go back to. The layout is of a championship golf course and one can see that, however the conditioning for me just wasn’t quite there.
My Favourite hole:
There was only one hole that stood out in my mind and that was the par 3 15th. Water guarding the green from 3 sides as well as some bunkering to the front of the green make it quite a tricky tee shot. The green on the day it was played was a temporary one so it would ordinarily play longer than what it did. A lovely challenging hole, the 15th was by far my favourite hole on the course.
I didn’t dislike the course and didn’t overly enjoy the course, it was somewhere in between for me. It didn’t leave me yearning to go back but once everything is back to full tilt and up and running, I would love to give it another shot. I’m sure my impression would change once everything is back in place. Give it a go and see what you think, I would love to hear other golfers thoughts on the course!
