San Lameer Country Club
SAGA rating: 70
Golf Digest ranking: 69
San Lameer Country Club is located about an hours drive from Durban towards Port Edward along the N2. Nestled in the hills overlooking the South Coast and with access to two blue flag beaches (The only Estate with this distinction in South Africa), San Lameer is a true treat for any golfer. The course although fairly short, has well constructed holes and accuracy is of utmost importance. Clever use of water hazards and tight fairways make club selection tricky on some holes but the course certainly gives value for shots. The greens run true and are in great nick. Having played here just after the South African ladies open in late January, the course was in pristine condition and I have been told it stays this way year round.
My favorite holes:
The 6th is a downhill par 4 with water guarding the green to the left and some clever bunkering to the right. A well struck tee shot with a medium to long iron will leave a short approach into the green which needs to be well thought out in order to come away with a good score here. I just loved the view from this tee box and with a herd of buck guarding the fairway, it was a truly wonderful hole the day I played it!
The 9th at San Lameer must be one of my favorite halfway holes of any course I have played. A Medium to short iron, depending on the wind, into this green flanked by water on the left and at the back, makes it a challenge to get on the green and stay on. Par here is a good score but the sheer holiday feel of the view as you look down from the tee box almost makes one forget about the golf for a little bit. Those palm trees behind the green make for quite a bit of daydreaming, a true gem of a hole!
San Lameer for me is one the premier courses in Kwazulu Natal. The staff and Meyer Du Toit, the golf director, do a truly stellar job of making one feel welcome. When you couple service with a course that is in tip top condition you have a recipe for a sure fire winner.
Put San Lameer on your list of “must play” golf courses and get down to the South Coast and give it a whirl, you won’t regret it!
